Employee Benefits

As I’m trying to maintain this current attitude about school, I thought I’d write about some of the benefits I receive.

- Free housing. It’s much bigger than I need and the location is not good at all, but if I rented a small apartment in the city center where I would love to live, rent would be at least 500TL per month.
- Free electric and water (up to 200TL per month).
- Free transportation to/from school everyday.
- Free lunch everyday at school.
- Free Turkish healthcare? Still don’t know much about this though…

Total this is worth about 900TL ($485) per month. So although my income is fairly low at 2200TL ($1190) a month, it’s really at least 3100TL ($1600). (Based on today's exchange rate.)

As much as I have thought about quitting my job and looking for another in Antalya, or even moving to a different city in Turkey, I would not be able to get these benefits anywhere else. And it’s important I realize this. My students, classes, and administration may be nearly impossible, but my job situation is good. Again, just something else I need to remind myself of daily…

  1. It is a great apartment. With a bathtub and western toilet. And you know all your neighbors.
