The Call to Prayer
Upon moving to Turkey I had hoped that I would be in range of hearing it from my home, but never did I imagine that it would be so clear. A huge field is all that lies between my apartment on a hill and the neighborhood mosque down below. So every morning promptly at 5:30 I am awoken by the call (ezan). I find it particularly interesting that the last two are almost within two hours of each other, around 7 and 9 in the evening. I would have thought they would have been evenly spread out throughout the day, but they are not. (I will have to figure out why.) This afternoon while out to lunch in the town centre it went on- no, it blasted. The speaker was literally right above our heads and was so loud we could not continue our conversation until it ended a couple minutes later. More on Isparta to follow soon...

So how many times a day is it? Also at 1 or 1:30? Do you go back to sleep in the morning or just use it as an alarm clock and get up?
ReplyDeleteIt's 5 times a day. Still haven't figured out the exact times though. And I definitely go back to sleep. I have not slept the past three nights anyway, so I'm usually up when it goes off, but then I'm usually able to fall asleep after.
